Spain and Argentina’s Finalissima in Doha is facing fresh uncertainty after Qatar’s football authorities postponed all domestic matches and competitions “until further notice,” as the fast-moving security situation in the region continues to disrupt travel and event planning.
Organisers are assessing up whether the Finalissima in Qatar can proceed after the recent escalation in conflict in the Middle East. The one-off match between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and 2024 Copa América champions Argentina is scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium, but the Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced the postponement of “all tournaments, competitions, and matches” with no restart date confirmed.Qatar's football authorities said: "The Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions, and matches, effective from today and until further notice."The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association's official channels,” while adding that airspace closures and disruption at Doha’s airport were compounding uncertainty around international travel.Spanish outlet AS reported the match was “up in the air,” noting that the Spanish and Argentine federations were reviewing contractual and insurance provisions in the event of cancellation or a late change of venue. The same report said the decision-making would ultimately rest with Qatari organisers prioritising team and supporter safety. The wider football calendar is already being reshaped with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirming that it has postponed the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 Round of 16 first-leg matches in the West Region with no revised dates currently confirmed. The AFC said in a statement: “The AFC will continue to closely monitor this rapidly evolving situation and remains resolute in ensuring the safety and security of all players, teams, officials, and fans."
