Erling Haaland has expanded his investment portfolio into chess by backing Norway Chess and a new FIDE-approved ‘Total Chess’ world tour designed to crown a combined-format champion and make the sport more spectator-friendly.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has become an investor in Norway Chess as the organisation prepares to launch the Total Chess World Championship Tour, a new global circuit approved by FIDE for a minimum of 16 years. The project is designed to create a season-long championship narrative across multiple time controls, with the tour set to crown a ‘FIDE World Combined Champion’ based on performance in Fast Classic, Rapid and Blitz chess.Fast Classic is positioned as the format innovation at the heart of the package, using a shorter classical time limit of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment, while still receiving a classical rating. The tour will consist of four tournaments each year, hosted by four different cities, with organisers planning a pilot event in autumn 2026 ahead of an official launch in the first quarter of 2027.Haaland said: “I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world.“The team behind Norway Chess has already done an impressive job growing the event, and joining the project was too exciting to pass up.”The stake comes via Chess Mates, a vehicle co-owned by Haaland and Norwegian businessman Morten Borge, which is expected to become a significant shareholder in Norway Chess and a key backer of the new tour format.Norway Chess has built a premium reputation in the sport’s calendar and is aiming to translate that event equity into a scalable property with repeatable host-city staging, stronger commercial inventory and a clearer proposition for broadcast and digital audiences.Kjell Madland, Norway Chess chief executive, said: “We expect the new championship to become one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar.“The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor says a great deal about the commercial potential of this tour. Erling has an enormous global following and is truly world-class when it comes to creating magical sporting moments. "I am absolutely certain he will bring tremendous value to Total Chess, help generate increased interest in the fascinating world of chess, and attract new audiences.”Backers are pitching the combined-format concept as a way to reward versatility and reduce format silos, while keeping elite names in front of fans more frequently than the traditional world championship cycle. The announcement also reflects a wider push within chess to build properties that travel better across entertainment platforms, where shorter-form content, highlights and personalities are often easier to monetise than long, single-event broadcasts.
