Spain’s La Liga have announced a new initiative aimed at cracking down on illegal broadcasts of Spanish league matches.
LaLiga have launched a €50 reward scheme for members of the public who submit a “valid and effective” report that helps identify illegal match broadcasts in bars, restaurants and betting shops, as part of a wider anti-piracy push in hospitality. The league’s LaLiga Bares reporting channel has been expanded to make it easier for customers to flag suspected unauthorised screenings, with LaLiga describing the tool as secure and confidential and designed to protect businesses that pay for the correct commercial rights. LaLiga president Javier Tebas said: “Piracy harms the entire football ecosystem and, especially, bars, restaurants and betting shops that comply with the law."We want anyone to know how to identify an illegal broadcast and to be clear that they can alert us in a simple, safe and confidential way. Citizen collaboration is a key tool in this fight, and we also want to recognise it.” LaLiga outlined a quick visual check that supporters can use during a screening. Viewers are asked to look at the corner of the TV picture for an on-screen letter, with “B” used for authorised bar feeds and “A” used for authorised betting shop feeds.Where neither letter appears, LaLiga said the establishment may be showing an illegal signal. Reports can be submitted through the LaLiga Bares channel by completing a short form and attaching images that allow the broadcast to be assessed. LaLiga’s teams then review the information against technical and objective criteria and, where the report meets the requirements and proves effective after validation, the €50 payment is triggered as part of what the league described as a regulated and transparent thank-you policy. The league also set out an anonymous option for people who want to report without receiving a payment, with the same validation approach applied before any follow-up action. LaLiga positioned the reporting channel as one element of a broader strategy to protect audiovisual rights, listing measures including advanced monitoring to detect illegal broadcasts, inspections in hospitality venues, collaboration with operators, technology platforms and authorities, legal action against distribution networks and awareness campaigns aimed at both businesses and supporters.
