Napoli's Diego Armando Maradona Stadium redevelopment plans that will increase the capacity to 70,000 have been approved by the city council.

Naples’ municipal authorities have unveiled plans for a €174m redevelopment of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, setting out a project designed to modernise Napoli’s home ground and strengthen the city’s case to host matches at Euro 2032.The proposal would remove the athletics track and move the stands closer to the pitch, with the stadium’s current layout reconfigured to improve sightlines and match UEFA requirements. The redesign also includes a new roof structure and upgraded hospitality areas, with capacity projected to rise from about 54,000 to around 70,000.Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said the city was moving towards delivery. “A concrete path for the modernisation of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is taking shape,” he said.“Blues fans know how much it takes to intervene on the facility to make it safer and more efficient, up to the great sporting challenges and international events that await our city.“In the next few days, in fact, we will again meet with the UEFA delegates to present the candidature of Naples and the Maradona stadium to host the Euro 2032 matches.“The collaboration between local and national institutions … allows us to plan, finance and carry out long-term interventions, in the exclusive interest of citizens and fans.“Naples deserves a stadium worthy of its history, its fans and the future of its ever-more modern city.”Infrastructure councillor Edoardo Cosenza said the project is being developed using ‘building information modelling’ to support precision in the design and delivery process. “We presented the progress of the project for the new Maradona,” he said, pointing to the “new first tier adjoining the pitch” and a centred playing surface. The stadium has been a long-running point of tension between the club and the local authority. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has previously argued for a brand-new venue, while the municipality has prioritised an upgrade that keeps the club at the historic Fuorigrotta site.Napoli are expected to continue playing at the stadium during construction if the project proceeds as planned.
