Nou Mestalla gets legal green light as Valencia CF press on with 2027 opening plan

Valencia CF have received a significant boost in their efforts to complete the Nou Mestalla after a court in Valencia dismissed a challenge to the building licence that underpins the restarted stadium works.The case focused on whether the plot met the legal requirements to proceed under Spanish planning rules, with opponents arguing the site and surrounding urbanisation works did not satisfy the conditions needed for a permit to stand.The decision leaves the existing licence in place and enables the club’s construction programme to continue, although further disputes linked to the wider urban planning framework around the development are still active.For Valencia, the ruling provides added certainty around a project that has been stalled and debated for years, and which is central to the club’s medium-term commercial strategy as it plans a move from the current Mestalla to a new, larger venue designed to unlock higher matchday and non-matchday revenues.The club has been positioning the project as back on a fixed delivery track since it put a new construction arrangement in place at the start of 2025.Valencia said: “Valencia CF have taken a new step towards the construction of the Nuevo Mestalla. The club have signed an agreement with the FCC Group, which becomes the construction company in charge of carrying out the work on the new stadium, scheduled to start again on 10th January.”Valencia’s communications around the project have repeatedly linked the stadium timeline to the club’s wider planning permissions and associated development work. The restart of the build was formally marked on January 10, 2025, when the club confirmed the signing of the staking and start of construction documentation at the Nou Mestalla site.Valencia said: “This Friday, January 10th, the signing of the staking and start of construction of Valencia CF’s stadium took place at the Nou Mestalla.”The same update set out Valencia’s target for opening the new ground, adding: “The Nou Mestalla’s inauguration is scheduled for the summer of 2027.”
