brief

The Premier League has produced a new journal outlining its work to support the wellbeing of players in an increasingly busy schedule.

The Premier League has produced a special edition of the ‘British Journal of Sports Medicine’ focused on player health, in a publication designed to showcase medical and performance research being used to shape clinical care and welfare standards across the competition. The League described the edition as a way of setting out “ongoing initiatives and projects” and giving readers insight into collaboration between academic institutions, clubs and the Premier League, with the stated aim of ensuring policy and practice are informed by a strong evidence base.Work on the edition was led by the Premier League’s Elite Performance team, which the League said conducts research on medical matters relevant to the competition and uses that research to inform oversight, guidance and resources for clubs. The Premier League linked that approach to the objective of supporting “top-tier medical care” while promoting consistency across clubs. The edition covers a range of medical topics, with a particular focus on head injuries and concussion. The Premier League highlighted discussion of the case for temporary concussion substitutions in football and signalled continued support for a future trial, subject to safeguards that protect integrity while prioritising player welfare. The full Premier League special edition is available to read via the BJSM platform, with the League positioning the publication as part of its wider work on evidence-led standards in elite sport medicine. The full Premier League special edition of the BJSM can be viewed online here.
