Rome has moved Roma’s Pietralata stadium plan into its next approvals phase after the city council backed the club’s feasibility work.

Rome City Council has approved a resolution confirming AS Roma’s Technical and Economic Feasibility Project (PFTE) for a new stadium at Pietralata meets the conditions tied to the city’s 2023 public-interest decision.Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said: “The new AS Roma stadium is more than just a sports facility: it is a project that speaks to the future, to regeneration, and to confidence in the city’s ability to deliver quality projects, redeveloping an entire area like Pietralata."We have worked tirelessly to get this far, and we will continue to do so with the same commitment. It is a forward-looking decision that strengthens Rome’s credibility and ability to complete strategic projects for the city.”The resolution enables the mayor (or a delegate) to take part in the Lazio Region’s decision-making service conference, with the project then expected to move into the single regional authorisation process, including environmental impact assessment and the formal Conference of Services. The scheme is planned for a 27-hectare site in the former SDO area, with 11.6 hectares allocated to public green space and another 3.5 hectares set aside for plazas and pedestrian routes.Roma’s current proposal is a 60,605-capacity stadium, including a 23,000-seat stand, alongside elements such as a museum, club shop, retail units, and hospitality and conference space. The overall investment is put at about €1.05bn, including roughly €696m for the stadium build, with the remainder linked to wider urban works and related costs.Planning councillor Maurizio Veloccia said: “It will not only be a modern sports facility dedicated to fans, but a truly new urban hub that will enrich the city and contribute to the redevelopment of the Pietralata area.”Roma are targeting completion by 2030 and currently play at the Stadio Olimpico under an agreement that runs until the end of the 2027-28 season.
