Sacramento Republic FC and majority owner Wilton Rancheria have expanded their long-planned Railyards venue into a 20,000-plus seat stadium with an overhead canopy, pushing the opening to 2028 and likely lifting the project budget.

Sacramento Republic FC and Wilton Rancheria have widened the scope of their new downtown stadium, committing to build a 20,000-plus seat venue from day one rather than starting smaller and expanding in phases. The USL Championship club said the updated Republic Stadium plan includes an overhead canopy providing cover for every seat, alongside additional premium and supporter-focused areas.Jesus Tarango, chairman of Wilton Rancheria, said: “With this stadium, Wilton Rancheria is reclaiming our space and matching the ambition of the region. "As a Tribe of firsts, we’re proud to deliver a 20,000+ seat, soccer-first stadium – the largest professional sports and entertainment venue in the region – and a home where community comes together and our collective future takes shape.”Chris Franklin, Wilton Rancheria’s COO, said: “Building bigger is a catalytic investment in the long-term transformation of downtown Sacramento. Wilton Rancheria is bringing the capital, vision, and execution needed to turn this site into a destination that drives economic impact, community connection, and sustained growth for the entire region.”Republic FC managing partner Kevin Nagle said: “For years, we have known what our fans deserve and what this region is capable of supporting. The response to groundbreaking removed any remaining doubt.“A 20,000-seat Republic Stadium – with a roof over every seat, safe standing for our supporters, and world-class amenities throughout – is not an overreach. It is exactly the venue Sacramento has earned, and we are proud to deliver it.”The club said the stadium will anchor a broader Railyards development on reclaimed ancestral lands, with Wilton Rancheria positioning the project as part of a new neighbourhood including commercial and community uses.Planning filings show new building permits have been submitted for a multi-purpose stadium at 11 7th Street in Sacramento’s Railyards district, reflecting the move away from the earlier 12,000-seat concept. The design team includes Manica as design architect, with House & Robertson Architects as architect of record, and the project has also highlighted safe-standing areas, a supporters’ plaza, expanded club spaces and a new west premium tower. The expanded canopy and wider fan-experience build is expected to extend the construction programme, with the club now targeting an opening in 2028 and work continuing through 2027.The venue is also being positioned as an outdoor entertainment site, with the club saying certain events could scale to around 27,000 attendees. The previous stadium configuration had been expected to cost about US$175m, with the revised plan anticipated to lift the budget to around US$350m.The later opening implies an additional season at the club’s current home, Heart Health Park, as Sacramento Republic seek to translate the larger build into higher matchday revenues and year-round event income.
