San Donato Milanese has formally closed the administrative process linked to AC Milan’s proposed new stadium in the San Francesco area after the local authority concluded the conditions to continue were no longer in place. AC Milan bought the land in February 2024 for around €40 million and spent a further €15 million devising plans for a new stadium on the site. However, late last year, AC Milan and Inter Milan officially became owners of the San Siro and appointed Foster + Partners to design a new stadium set to replace the existing arena. The municipality linked the decision directly to AC Milan and Inter’s move to progress a San Siro redevelopment and said: "During the meeting, all participants shared the Administration's assessments, agreeing to close the procedure and at the same time expressing their willingness to collaborate should new projects emerge in the future regarding the development of the San Francesco area that are supra-local and therefore require their involvement." That leaves the door left open for a different development on the same land with talk of a training centre, youth sports facility or real estate project all being mooted.
