UEFA has cancelled the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina after security disruption in the Gulf forced the match out of Qatar and the parties failed to agree a replacement venue and date.
UEFA has cancelled the 2026 Finalissima between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and Copa América 2024 champions Argentina after the fixture became unplayable in Qatar and talks over alternatives broke down. The match had been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium, with Qatar’s local organising structure in place to deliver the event.UEFA said: “It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar.”The governing body said the decision followed discussions with Qatari authorities and was driven by the “current political situation” in the region, with travel disruption and wider safety concerns also impacting other planned events.Qatar’s Local Organising Committee has separately cited airspace disruption and travel restrictions as factors in the cancellation of its Qatar Football Festival, which had been set to include a series of international friendlies.UEFA said it explored multiple alternatives to protect the match, a flagship project within its strategic partnership with CONMEBOL.The first option was to keep the original March 27 date but move the game to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, with a 50:50 split of supporters.UEFA said Argentina rejected that plan, and also turned down a proposed two-legged format featuring a March 27 match in Madrid and a return fixture in Buenos Aires during a future international window before UEFA EURO and Copa América 2028.UEFA then sought a commitment that, if a neutral European venue could be secured, the match could still be played on March 27 or March 30.That proposal was also rejected, UEFA said, before Argentina proposed playing after the 2026 World Cup, which UEFA said Spain could not accommodate due to scheduling.South American confederation CONMEBOL and the Argentinian Football Association disputed elements of UEFA’s account and said they had accepted the idea of a neutral venue in Europe, but only on a different date.CONMEBOL and the AFA said: "CONMEBOL and the AFA consistently reiterated their commitment to playing the Finalissima at a neutral venue and accepted the proposed site following UEFA’s prolonged insistence on playing in Madrid. "Unfortunately, it was not possible to reach a final agreement to hold the match, as the alternative date requested could not be accommodated given the limited time available.“Spain’s federation said it was willing to play without conditions and, working with UEFA, had offered “all possible options” to stage the match. The cancellation is a setback for a competition positioned as a prestige fixture with commercial value for federations, sponsors and host markets, and for Qatar’s post-World Cup event strategy tied to its modern stadium inventory. The Finalissima was relaunched in 2022 as part of UEFA and CONMEBOL’s cooperation agreement, with Argentina beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley to win the inaugural edition.
